It's happened to all writers at some point, we're writing along and the next thing we know, the main character has climbed up a tree and can't figure out how to get down. That's a pretty good illustration of writer's block. So, since it's going to happen, what do you do about it?
1) Throw rocks - I mean, motivate your character to get down on their own. They climbed up there, they should be able to climb down. Figuring out when the character started to climb too high in the proverbial tree to get down on their own will help back them up to a place that the plot can move forward.
2) Light the tree on fire - actually, skip the fire part. I like trees too much. But, calling the fire department to come rescue you is a great idea. So call for reinforcements, reach out to a friend/critique partner and brainstorm how to get the character down and keep the plot happening.
3) Climb the tree. Sometimes it takes a deeper perspective from inside the character's head to see the next part of the story, so climb up with them and see what they see.
4) Break the fourth wall and pull your character out of the tree with the full understanding that you're going to put them right back up there. Bring them down for coffee and a chat. Really, i mean and find an interview sheets on the internet to learn more about your character. There might just be gold in a strange hobby they have.
There are a lot of other ways to defeat writer's block, what are your favorites?
